Prisoner of None – First Look

One of the projects I’ve been working on this year is called Prisoner of None. While I don’t want to reveal the plot just yet, I will take this opportunity to praise my collaborator, David Bednarski.

I “met” David via last year’s 30 Character Challenge and was absolutely floored by the talent that sprang from his pencil. In passing, I said, “We should work together sometime,” and sometime after, he took me up on the offer (officially in February). Since then, we’ve been coming up with the concept, the look of the characters, the story…it’s been a lot of fun, and it’s been the most relaxed thing I’ve worked on. We both agreed that we wanted this to be a “slow burn” and have the liberty of taking our time on the story. One of the things about this project is I’m doing plot-first storytelling; in other words, we’re working “Marvel style.” I’ve given David full reign of how the story flows, and a pretty detailed plot for the first (I think) three “issues” (each issue will be about 25 pages, but each installment may be less). It’s been a pretty great experiment for me because I’ve never been one to give the reigns on a story away. Part of that comes from the fact that, in the past, I’ve only written the stories; now, I’m lettering them as well, so it gives me more to do. And Dave is an incredible artist. There’s no need to hold his hand; he’s obviously talented. He doesn’t need me to write a story for him, but since this is our story, we both bring a lot to the table, equally. And I trust him implicitly.

I think you’ll be impressed with the world we’ve created. The story spans almost 70 years (give or take) and it has a lot of twists (at least I think so). I’m very lucky to have David on this. I can easily say that this will not look like anything on the stands or on the ‘Net. Very, very proud of this story.

Below is a promo image of one of our characters. Is he a hero? A villain? What’s his name? What’s his story? All of that will be revealed later (we actually have one-page origins for all of the cast). For now, enjoy the image (suitable for desktop wallpapering) below. If for some reason the image below doesn’t expand, click here.
