RECAP: In November 2010, I participated in the 30 Characters Challenge and created 35 new characters. In December, I gave them all away (for the most part). I decided that one of my projects in 2011 would be to add to that list of 35 and, by December 2011, create 100 new characters total. Every Monday, I will post a new character. This is the seventeenth:
Let’s review: A few months ago (sometime last year), Alan Moore (who doesn’t need an introduction) said that American comics have, more or less, become stagnant in the wake of Watchmen. Writer Jason Aaron took umbrage with this. There were a million replies and comments when these two hit the blogosphere, and a cultural firestorm ensued. I sat back and wondered what the big deal was. I am a huge fan of both writers, and I enjoy my yearly reread of Watchmen. But they’re just rejiggered Charlton characters…anyone can do that, right?
(I know what you’re going to say…it’s less about the characters and more about the story. You’re right. Please keep reading.)
Here’s your chance to write “Watchmen.” (Note the quotes…I’m not making up a group name so have at it.) I have come up with a group of characters that, if you’re so inclined, you can use as a version of the Watchmen. I’m not going to give you anything but their name and a simple description. Go with that and create.
Strix – Avian inspired inventor
By the way, this is why his name is Strix. And in reality, he’s more of a RetroFix of Black Owl than he is a take on Nite Owl.
NOTE: Due to weird HM usage rules, I’m not posting the images of the initial designs, so feel free to clicks the link to see them.
And, as promised, you are free to use this new open source character with this Creative Commons license:
