There’s no real “behind the scenes” commentary to make for this page (unless Tom has something to say). We never really said what happened to Eric and Gretchen. Not explicitly, anyway. I always assumed she died in a plane crash that Eric survived (at least, that’s what I think happened), but reading this, you might think that Gretchen moved away and Eric is afraid to fly.
